In order to strengthen the relation between UPH and partners in Service Learning, the Student Life Department, held another Service Learning (SL) Partners Gathering on May 18, 2017, at MYC MPR UPH Karawaci.

For this year, Service Learning Partners Gathering was attended by approximately 40 partners, coming from schools, tutoring institution, orphanages, nursing homes and NGO (Non-Government Organization). This event was held to strengthen the relationship between UPH and its partners in Service Learning, but aside from that, this event was hoped to be a means of communication, in which new collaboration opportunities and future service developments are hoped to come up.

In this event, Vice Rector of Student Affairs, Curtis Jay Taylor, reminded the original purpose of Service Learning in students learning process. Keeping in mind that UPH student, might have never known how does service works in real world, and probably, they might not have experienced doing services outside.

“Through the Service Learning program, students are expected to obtain the essential sensitivity towards reality. Thus, we need the help of our partners to teach our students, how to serve others. Aside from that, you can help by giving insights into what our students have planned, and probably, provide development and suggestions, and this is what we call as a learning process. Just like our motto, Service Learning UPH: 100% serving 100% learning,” said Curtis.

Furthermore, Assistant Lecturer in UPH Faculty of Liberal Arts, Hendra Thamrindinata, S.Si., M.Div., said that the Service Learning program is truly an effective way to evoke student’s awareness towards others.

With this, we really hope that in the future, they will be great leaders in their respective fields, and also, for them to have the orientation to be aware of the society around them,” Hendra explained.

In addition, the final goal of the Service Learning program, according to Andry M. Panjaitan, Director of Student Life UPH, who is also a Leadership Lecturer at UPH, is to shape these students to be the leader with Christian values of truth, a leader who are willing to serve and to make an impact. Moreover, this goal is surely impossible if only understood as a theory, in this program, we practice what we have learned.

Dhani also encouraged the partners to write the kind of service and needs in a form for each institution, so that later, these forms will be handed to the faculty to be offered to the students as options in doing the Service Learning program.
